A FUTURE FOR COMMUNICATION ?
I have spent some time looking at the news and sometimes find I cannot understand why we do the things we do. I also find myself talking more and more to people who wonder if anything actually makes a difference. And I can only truthfully answer that I don't know. I come from an age when as a child I was taught that children should be seen and not heard. Nowadays, I recognise this in a different form, a thought something like "what is the point? I don't make a difference." I have begun to see that the thoughts I have are not always consistent with those of an adult human being. They are more like something I learned sometime in the past , something no longer valid. I do notice that the past is a very powerful and valuable thing, but I do not always recognise the subtle way it shapes my ideas and actions today.
I find I am living life consistent with my thoughts and opinions which are shaped by the past and not something I choose but rather something I realise later or that I was once told and now think is true. Things my ancestors decided show up generations in the future unquestioned for the most part but almost always unnoticed. You may think I perceive this as wrong, rather I invite you to look at this as a way of understanding why we think and do what we do. It is difficult to grow and to think for oneself when we are living out other people's ideas and decisions, some of which are appropriate today, some of which I question and some not. It is easy to feel like I have to change something, someone and sometimes myself. It is uncomfortable to live in a world which is not consistent with that which I learned in the past, a world in any case coloured by my own family's version of it. I notice that when I look at the future I see I will automatically live my life this way. I react and think up a way to change it for the better and look for someone to blame. My actions are consistent with my thoughts and the result I produce. One example is that of my friend telling me that his daughter was totally unreasonable and rude the other day when he forgot her 18th birthday. She was obviously upset but he thought she behaved badly; after all she should know that he never remembers birthdays and this is the way he is and will always be. I came to the conclusion that his daughter's actions were exactly consistent with those of someone whose father forgot her 18th birthday. That she should realise this didn't seem to make much difference to the situation or her feelings. I found myself asking, "Why are we always surprised at people's reactions? Yet I can see we are at a time now when mankind has reached an opening for a new and possible future, where we recognise the human beings that we are, and that we are moving into a new age. I heard someone say that we are in the age of sincerity, an age when human beings have been learning and growing up. In this framework feeling sorry or bad is a sufficient justification for our actions. We have grown to a level of mastery in many fields, but as far as being human is concerned, we have been unable to see alternative ways to be in the world, other than those which have got us to where we are now. In the age of thinking and being alive there is an opening to master what it is to be human, acknowledging those who came before us, forgiving ourselves as children playing at and being right and wrong. All this has got us here. We are seeing the dawn of an adult human being, who can see his/her ideas blossom in others without having to be recognised and acknowledged for it, without having to win, nor having a reason to say something; one who does not stop when they are not understood, nor have to check if anyone listened; one who is able to take all this into account and learn that it is not necessary to have a reason or justification or have to worry what others may say, and yet be accountable to the world versus proving that one's own agenda is right. It is to be the kind of human being who does not see himself as a better person, nor one who has an agenda to be better than someone else. This kind of human being is concerned only with a kind of being alive that is an expression of life. It has no meaning and is the life of an ordinary individual who says they make a difference and lives fulfilled now, not when they have their way. It is not a place to get to but a life of mastery, where the booby prizes are the trophies and acknowledgement. I sometimes see this in myself. It is not something that I already am, more like something that is available for me to choose, I can own up to who I am and take appropriate action without being afraid of the outcome. I recognise that the age of sincerity is over and the days of "I am sorry I forgot something" is of the past. That someone out in our past no longer needs to be the reason why I cannot do or say something now. I no longer need to be on a mission, nor should I listen as though I already know what they are saying; instead I can begin to recognise when I do not listen and learn to listen newly to what is being said. Everyone of us can be this kind of human being . I do not need a certificate or some form of recognition to do it. I generate it for myself when and only when I choose. It is not something I became, I discovered it in myself. Everything we ever did or didn't do gave us this new future. We made it available for ourselves, maybe we just grew up. There is no one person to receive a medal, there is no one thing to do. Within this context heroes are a thing of the past. It is not some quality that they have or you have, or something or some place to get to, it is fundamental in our humanity. It has driven us to change and to strive to achieve. In a new era where man is a grown adult, his mind is capable of thinking as well as reacting and does not have to give up something, nor change himself. We are human and can start from there, living a life in the future not in our past, using our past like a friend to talk to and use as a resource and not a reason. In this context I look at war with no blame. As an adult I can see that war is an expression of the level of communication we have achieved so far on a planet full of human beings who already know the best thing for themselves, a planet where our ancestors determine the future and our cultures determine who we are. We believe we know best or at least have an idea of the right way to live in peace on this earth. We stand on ground that our ancestors say we own, and fight the elements as though they cannot understand who we are. We are sheer children in mastering communication. When we have tried every way we know how, we then DO war. As an adult we can own up to not knowing how to, and look beyond what we know. I see that this level of communication is present not only in countries who fight each other, but in all countries and at all levels, governments, management, and families. This exact same human being makes the world wrong and then will not talk to their next door neighbour, worse will not speak to members of their own family, gives up and expresses this same breakdown in communication by either saying they don't like them, or get on with them. So it may not be personal, maybe we are all just playing at war with each other, robbery, rape, murder, sending people to Coventry right here, right in this room with people we just give up on and do our own version of war to. Now as a child I will hear this and get upset as though someone is to blame. As an adult, I can look and recognise when I do this and own up to it, head held high and without loss of sleep. I am not looking for answers, more like acknowledging that every child is already born to have this possible future. Some people and communities have already recognised this. What we can do now is declare a new age. I use declaration in this document to create a future to live into which includes everyone. When George Washington declared independence it did not exist like a thing/object, but it did express a future for everyone in that community to look to and from which to shape their actions. It also provides a context for something that already exists in the world and a place in it which can grow. I can see a future where people generate this for themselves, without having to be part of a development group or practice. If I step into the age of thinking and being alive, I can look from there, and have humility and see where I can begin to talk to those I could not talk to and learn to master communication in those moments. Then I can be face to face with who I really am being without loss of face or dignity. Looking good becomes a thing of the past and my communication is an expression of myself. | |||
